Biography

I joined the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine in 1995, following four years as a research scientist in Scotland. With a background in biological sciences, I gained postgraduate experience during a Masters (by research) in applied ethology (parkland deer), and a PhD investigating indices of chronic stress in farmed red deer.

My academic and research activities require an extensive knowledge of animal welfare science, covering a variety of farmed species and production stages in animal agriculture, and companion animals. Routine data capture of welfare outcomes to inform and improve policy and practice and the application of social science to better understand stakeholder attitudes to animal welfare characterise my research interests. I have a diverse research portfolio ranging from stakeholder related research to support improvements in farm animal welfare, educational research to enhance teaching practice and training opportunities,  to veterinary ethics.

Current and recent examples of research projects include:

  • Validation of welfare outcomes in pigs at slaughter (including stakeholder perception and training)
  • Evaluation of private standards for farm animal welfare
  • A pilot study to investigate the type and frequency of client requests about companion animal behaviour problems in veterinary practice in Ireland
  • Policy delphi consultation process to explore ethical challenges facing the veterinary professionals in Ireland
  • Policy delphi consultation to identify key challenges and solutions to support good equine welfare in Ireland
  • On-farm emergency slaughter of bovines
  • Early warning indicators of farm animal neglect and One Welfare

I have also collaborated in research on dairy cow welfare, dog bite incidents and responsible dog ownership.

Research

Research Interests

A central theme in my research is to explore stakeholder perceptions and policy relating to animal welfare, routine data capture and utilisation and veterinary ethics.

In 2016, two major research projects were successfully completed. Since 2011 we have been investigating the potential of recording welfare outcomes in pigs at slaughter, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the  Marine.  This project was inspired by a pilot study, funded by the Wellcome Trust, which originally investigated the prevalence of tail docking in pigs at slaughter.

The Veterinary Council of Ireland's Educational Trust and the prestigious Newman Post Doctoral Fellowship programme funded a 2 year study to Explore Current and Future Ethical Issues Facing the Veterinary Profession in Ireland.

Current areas of research include an evaluation of private standards such as quality assurance programmes in animal welfare, One Welfare, exploring a mechanism to establish Day One Competences in Behavioural Medicine, current practices with acute bovine injury.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

As relatively new disciplines, the landscape of animal welfare science and veterinary ethics is changing with the growth in research. Society is also becoming more zoocentric and my teaching philosophy is to reflect on current practice and reimagine best practice.

Modules Coordinated

201700   VET30430     Veterinary Medicine: Animal behaviour, welfare
201700   VET10020     Veterinary Medicine: Animals in Soc.: Eth. Perspec.
201700   CPCA01010     CPD Ag, Food Sc & Vet Med: Concepts of Animal Welfare

Enhancement of Teaching

In 2017 I revised my blended learning approach, to provide a greater balance between lectures and e/Lectures. With the increased importance of veterinary behavioural medicine, a new tutorial was created to support a greater understanding and application of learning theory and approaches to addressing common companion animal behavioural issues. In addition, providing greater oversight to indicate the relevance of animal behaviour to veterinary practice has been included in the animal behaviour component of VET30430 module. Blueprinting of assessments was instituted in 2016, to provide a systematic approach to coverage of learning materials in assessments.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

I use blended learning - a mixture of Lectures and e/Lectures (narrated PowerPoint slides) and face to face tutorials. The tutorials are designed to explore and develop practical aspects of lectures and eLectures for example using case studies to support the understanding and application of animal welfare law or veterinary ethics. A recent development has been the use of in-class apps to capture student feedback, as a platform for discussion. The module content is reviewed annually, and revision of learning materials is prioritised according to new research developments and changes in policy, practice and regulations. Blue-printing is used to ensure a balance of content in the assessment and item analysis is used to review and enhance assessment questions. In addition, assessment questions are peer reviewed by an external examiner and internal examiners. A feedback schedule is arranged after assessment results are published, to meet with students.

Developing as a Teacher

The teaching environment has changed in the last 20 years, requiring a transition to new methods to support student learning. I have developed a blended learning approach to provide flexibility and engage with students. Learning from other 'teachers' has also been important, and I enjoy team teaching, working with colleagues from a range of backgrounds including philosophers, government veterinary inspectors and veterinary clinicians. My role as a researcher also informs my teaching, and provides a roadmap to reviewing module content.

Innovation & Leadership

Designing a flexible learning environment using a blended learning approach characterises my role as a teaching innovator and leader. It is further enhanced by my experience as a researcher and member of government committees. Research has also been an important avenue to innovate, provide data and support best practice. Peer reviewed publications and www.animalethicsdilemma.net demonstrate examples of innovation and leadership in teaching.
