Biography

Qualified with MVB from UCD in 1986. Worked in general veterinary practice until 1990. Worked as veterinary research officer in Department of Veterinary Pathology, Veterinary Sciences Division, Stormont from 1990-1999. College Lecturer in Department of Veterinary Pathology, UCD 1999 - 2004. Senior lecturer 2004-present.

Scientific editor of 'The Veterinary Journal' since 2007.
Elected member of 'The Veterinary Council of Ireland' 2007-2011.

Areas of expertise: Gross anatomical pathology, histopathology and immunohistochemistry, Assessment of laboratory animal models of human disease, Disease investigation and immunopathogenesis studies.

Extensive experience in the use of experimental mouse models in the investigation of the immunopathogenesis of respiratory disease including
· Tuberculosis and Genital Chlamydiosis  - with The Statens Serum Institute, Copenhagen, Denmark.
· Bordetella pertussis infection and asthma - with The Institute of Immunology, National University of Ireland, Maynooth and the Pasteur Institute, Lille, France. (Funding HRB and SSF, Athens, Greece)
· Mechanisms of resistance/susceptibility to ascarid infections - with Trinity College Dublin, Ireland and The University of Nottingham, UK.(Funding SFI)
  Studies on leucoencephalomyelopathy in specific pathogen free cats - with NUI, Galway (Dr. J. Kelly)
  Studies on the development and use of nanoparticle vaccines against parainfluenza-3 virus infection in calves - with AFBI, Stormont, Belfast & Teagasc, Grange (Dr. M. Welsh & Dr. B. Earley).
