Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

I believe in the application of adult teaching, learning and assessment techniques in teaching veterinary and veterinary nursing undergraduates: andragogical methods, professional respect, self-reflection and the fostering of enthusiasm for life-long professional development. I aspire to always be open, engaging and receptive to all student feedback on my teaching methods.

Enhancement of Teaching

It is my experience that when veterinary and veterinary nursing undergraduates reach the clinical years, the relevance and application of what they are learning becomes acute, and they are deeply motivated to expand and contextualise their prior learning experiences. I see my role as to facilitate these students to develop competency in practical diagnostic skills, good habits in critical thinking, an ability to reflect on their performance and assess their own limitations and an enthusiasm for life-long learning. I believe that andragogical methods like case studies and role playing are very effective adult learning tools. I use these tools in my clinical teaching and feedback from the students is very positive. A typical quote from the written feedback forms is "The case presentations were great, I learned so much from them." I have also received consistent feedback on the need for structured learning tasks, for when the clinic case load is quiet. This has led me to develop classes imparting specific practical skills and also to develop a first-opinion component to the module, where students go to local practices or equine events. A colleague has observed my lectures and the feedback was positive as to them being relevant, practical, current and engaging. However, I have taken note of external examiner concerns of assessment methods in the final year veterinary module, and I adjusted the assessment in the equine clinical studies module to improve the quality and relevance of assessment for example by introducing direct assessment of practical skills.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

Based on feedback from students and external examiners in the 2008/2009 year, the School changed the format for the final year of Veterinary Medicine 2012/2013 from one Veterinary Medicine module to distinct smaller modules covering individual disciplines or groups of disciplines. This gave me the opportunity to develop a 2 week Equine Clinical Studies (ECS) module with teaching and assessment methods and learning outcomes directly tailored to producing equine veterinary graduates with appropriate skills, as required by the Veterinary Council of Ireland, in a day one veterinary graduate entering equine practice. The module design was also informed by a survey of the equine veterinary profession, which I devised and implemented, to determine what the practicing profession most values in new graduates: case management (problem solving) and practical skills, communication skills, team work and appreciation of the ethics and economics involved in veterinary practice. Through my contacts in the profession I reflect on the perceived quality of our equine students and graduates and use this information to inform adjustments in my module, for example, when I heard that students are not proficient in basic horse handling skills, I added these skills to those covered in the ECS module. These contacts also informed my School committee work in reviewing the extramural studies (EMS) module. My contribution toward the redesign of these modules provided me with the opportunity to optimise and integrate learning opportunities for and assessment of students during these modules. I also established post-graduate training in equine veterinary medicine in UCD by having the UCD Veterinary Hospital recognised as a residency training centre for the European College of Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM) in 2006, and designing and implementing equine medicine internship and residency training programmes. Since then 8 interns and 2 residents have completed speciality training requirements.

Developing as a Teacher

In 2017 I achieved successful renewal of my European College of Equine Internal Medicine Diplomate status (renewed every 5 years), demonstrating that I keep current with developments in equine veterinary medicine through research, teaching and clinical effort. In 2016 I completed the UCD Diploma in University Teaching and Learning to enhance the quality of my didactic and clinical teaching. In 2014 I achieved the Certificate in Laboratory Animal Science & Training (LAST-Ireland) to ensure that my research complies with the legal and ethical considerations. My involvement in national (Veterinary Ireland) and European (FEEVA) veterinary representative bodies enables me to keep students aware of topical issues in the field of equine veterinary medicine. I assist junior colleagues in the design and content of material they deliver, either to students in the clinic, in presentation of research abstracts or as part of continuing professional development.

Innovation & Leadership

I have led the development, implementation and updating of equine medicine teaching, learning and assessment in UCD since 2006, using innovative teaching, learning and assessment methods. I strive to keep my teaching current, relevant and effective through T&L courses, continuing professional development courses, professional industry involvement, and reflection on the perceived quality of graduates by the Irish equine veterinary profession and through identifying new teaching and learning opportunities for students and graduates within the UCD School of Veterinary Medicine.
