Biography

David Brayden is Full Professor of Advanced Drug Delivery at the School of Veterinary Medicine and a Fellow of the UCD Conway Institute. Following a Ph.D. in Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge, UK (1989), and a post-doctoral research fellowship at Stanford University, CA (1991), he set up Elan Corporation's pharmacology laboratory in Dublin (1991). At Elan, he became a senior scientist and project manager of several of Elan's Joint-Venture drug delivery research collaborations with US biotech companies. In 2001, he joined UCD as a college lecturer in veterinary pharmacology and was appointed Senior Lecturer (2005), Associate Professor (2006), and Full Professor  (2014). He completed a successful Principle Investigator Grant from SFI on the topic of oral delivery of novel mucoadhesive polymeric peptide conjugates (2005-2009). Professor Brayden was the Director of an SFI Research Cluster grant (The Irish Drug Delivery Research Network), that was awarded 7.2 million euro by SFI from 2007-2013. He was the Deputy Coordinator of an EU 7th Framework grant on oral nanomedicines (www.TRANS-INT.eu), 2012-2017.  In 2014, he was one of four Principal Investigators (Co-PIs) on the successful SFI Centre bid in Medical Devices (CURAM), worth over 40 million EUR over 6 years.  He is the author or co-author of more than 200 research publications and patents. Professor Brayden serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Drug Discovery Today, European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews and the Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics. In 2017, he became an Associate Senior Editor of Therapeutic Delivery. He was Chairman of the UK-Ireland Chapter of the Controlled Release Society (2003-2006), Co-Chair of the Veterinary Programmes at the CRS international conferences (2003-2006), and served on the CRS Board of Scientific Advisors (2006-2009) and the CRS Annual Meeting Programme Committee (2015, 2016). At UCD, he was Chairman of the Animal Research Ethics Committee (2005-2007) and was a member of the UCD Research Ethics Committee (2006-2011) and was elected by Academic Council to the UCD Promotions and Tenure Committee (2010-2012). He was Director of Research for the School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine (2007-2008) and Head of the Veterinary Biosciences Section from 2013-2017. On the teaching side, he coordinates undergraduate and postgraduate modules on Biological Fluids and Drug Discovery and Development  and contributes to a module on Cell Communication. He contributes Professional Ethics material to the Conway Institute Core Research Skills modules and also coordinates a 4th level online module on Drug Discovery and Development for both UCD and Clinical Research Development Ireland (CRDI).  His major research interests are in oral peptide delivery and nanomedicines  and his team currently comprises 4 PhD students, 2 postdocs and a technician. In 2015, he was made an Adjunct Professor at NUI Galway to support his Co-PI role in the SFI CURAM Centre. He is a Fellow of the Controlled Release Society (elected 2012), the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (elected 2017), the EU Academy of Sciences (elected 2017), and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Marquis Whose Who (2017).

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

Teaching involves fostering critical thinking at undergraduate and postgraduate level using multiple styles of engagement and is a continuum from research

Enhancement of Teaching

-Use of UCD's Performance Management and Development System (PMDS)and its mentoring system to discuss my teaching development. This involves regular meetings with a respected senior staff member to discuss new aspects of course development, blended learning, full use of Blackboard and online learning and incorporation of new teaching examples to illustrate concepts. -My role as an external examiner to the Royal Veterinary College, London, and the Glasgow Vet School allowed comparison of student standards and also the range of offerings with my main UCD vet modules (Vet20040/20080). -My communication techniques have been improved through examining video of my conference presentations, by use of narrated Powerpoint lectures for continuing professional development, in providing teaching materials for academic societies, and by collated feedback to presentations from conference delegates. -External examiner and student feedback reports are assessed annually on my modules and changes are frequently made in response to constructive comments. My teaching has been observed by peers in joint lectures and staff are always happy to share views on module content and delivery. -Use of my professional network in the pharmaceutical industry to access role models for undergraduate and postgraduate students in terms of the career paths these successful people have taken. High performing executives from the industry and venture capital companies contribute to the Drug Discovery module (Phar40050). Their presentations are linked to my own lectures, thereby enhancing impact of the material. -Postgraduate teaching has been enhanced by my use of a placement programme through which my students carry out research for a thesis chapter in overseas labs or in industry. A reciprocal arrangment operates as my lab receives international PhDs for set periods. The postgraduate learning experience is enhanced for all participants.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

-My UCD biosciences teaching load currently comprises 44 lectures, 15 practicals and 10 tutorials. I have maintained my teaching load along with a heavy involvement in reseach and research administration. -Contributed to the development of a veterinary pharmacology core curriculum by the British Pharmacological Society in 2004 and this is the basis of much of my teaching content. I will be contributing material in the Stage 3 Veterinary Therapeutics module in 2013. The veterinary MVM degree is professionally accredited and specifies elements of currulum content wich is subject to international review. -My science teaching is closely aligned to my research strengths in pharmaceutics and I was invited by SBBS to construct the main UCD Drug Discovery and Development undergraduate module and to assemble lecturing support. This was the first time this had been taught at UCD and the course grows every year in terms of take up from all parts of Science and Medicine. It is enhanced because every year I review new case studies of drugs approved by the FDA. -Aspects of this course were expanded into a 4th level module, Phar40090, which was offered to UCD and Cluster postgrads in 2009 and to Molecular Medicine Ireland in 2011. -Continuing Professional Development is taught to pharma companies and to the Vet community (online module). The knock-on benefit is that I can then use some of it for undergraduate teaching. -Contribute to UCD 4th level structured modular teaching by generating extensive workshop materials on 'Scientific Integrity' for Ph.D. candidates in the Conway Institute and UCD College of Life Sciences. -Module content is continuously reviewed and enhanced, informed by current research literature, new texts and online materials. As part of my 5 year teaching plan, I will develop a Masters module in veterinary pharmaceutics for pharmacy graduates.

Developing as a Teacher

-Engagement with the Centre for Teaching and Learning to access workshops on best practice, use of IT resources, setting exam questions, as well as small and large group teaching. -Study of the academic literature to assess the evidence that facilitated computer-assisted learning can achieve similar learning outcomes as wet laboratory practicals. This is required to justify the investment in CALs for designated student veterinary and science groups. -Learning from academic staff on Doctoral Studies Panels. These staff are from across UCD and each has unique supervisory experience to draw upon. -Objective analysis of student exam scripts to ascertain if learning objectives are being met by the majority of the class. This impacts on my teaching for the next module iteration. Performance of students reflects on the teachng received. -In my postgraduate teaching, assessment of my PhD student performance at viva voce exams is made by being present in a silent capacity. This informs as to whether my training has been effective and can be improved upon. -My experience as an external PhD examiner for 7 theses at major universities also informs as to the standard of my supervision of my own students.

Innovation & Leadership

-Use of the latest texts and computer-assisted programmes to update and design new modules for veterinary medicine and science undergraduates, as well as for 4th Level postgraduate teaching in UCD and nationally via Molecular Medicine Ireland. -Designed CPD modules for the pharmaceutical industry and veterinary profession. This is likely to grow.
