David Brayden is Associate Professor of Drug Delivery at the School of Veterinary Medicine and a Fellow of the UCD Conway Institute in UCD. Following a Ph.D. in Pharmacology at the University of Cambridge, UK (1989), and a post-doctoral research fellowship at Stanford University, CA (1991), he set up Elan Corporation's pharmacology laboratory in Dublin (1991). At Elan Biotechnology Research, he became a senior scientist and project manager of several of Elan's Joint-Venture drug delivery research collaborations with US biotech companies. In 2001, he joined UCD as a lecturer in veterinary pharmacology and was appointed Senior Lecturer (2005) and Associate Professor (2006). He completed a successful Principle Investigator Grant from SFI on the topic of oral delivery of novel mucoadhesive polymeric peptide conjugates (2005-2009). Professor Brayden is the Director of an SFI Research Cluster grant (The Irish Drug Delivery Research Network), that was awarded 7.2 million euro by SFI in December, 2007. He is the author or co-author of more than 200 research publications and patents. Professor Brayden serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Drug Discovery Today, European Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Advanced Drug Delivery Reviews and the Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics. In 2010 he became an Associate Editor of the new international journal, Therapeutic Delivery. He was Chairman of the UK-Ireland Chapter of the Controlled Release Society (2003-2006), Co-Chair of the Veterinary Programmes at the CRS international conferences (2003-2006) and served on the CRS Board of Scientific Advisors (2006-2009). His research team was awarded the Best Research Paper Prize of the Journal of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics (2005). In 2012, he was the first Irish scientist to be made a Fellow of the Controlled Release Society. He was also awarded an American Biographical Society Hippocratic Award for services to medicine (2012). At UCD, he was Chairman of the Animal Research Ethics Committee (2005-2007) and is a member of the UCD Research Ethics Committee (2006-) as well as the UCD Promotions and Tenure Committee (elected, 2010). He was Director of Research for the School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine (2007-2008). On the teaching side, he coordinates undergraduate and postgraduate modules on Biological Fluids and Drug Discovery and Development and contributes to a module on Cell Communication. He contributes Professional Ethics material to the Conway Institute Core Research Skills and Advanced Research Skills modules and also coordinates a 4th level module on Integrated Pharmacology for UCD and Molecular Medicine Ireland. Professor Brayden works as an independent consultant for drug delivery companies and has provided expert pharmacology opinion in three veterinary practice legal cases. His major research interests are in oral peptide delivery and novel formulations of calcitonin and his team typically comprises 4 PhD students, 2 postdocs and a technician. In 2012, he was the first Irish academic to be inducted into the College of Fellows of the Controlled Release Society.

My best teaching draws on nearly 30 years of pharmaceutical research experience and I try to generate enthusiasm whenever I am interacting with students. It's all about stimulating students to go off and read around up-to-date lecture material to re-inforce concepts of pharmacology, drug discovery and drug delivery.

201100 PHAR40050 Pharmacology: Drug Discovery and Development
201100 VET20040 Veterinary Medicine: Biological Fluids
I have used my professional network in the pharmaceutical industry to access role models for students in terms of the career paths some of these successful people have taken. High performing executives from the industry and venture capital companies contribute to my Drug Discovery courses and I chair these interactions. Students respect graduates who have taken successful career paths. I have also brought the British Pharmacology Society's 'pharmaCALogy' computer-assisted learning to UCD by which students across UCD perform CALs in moderated sessions and I am currently beta testing the new suite of BPS programmes 'Prescribe.' Research shows that student learning from pharmacology CALs matches that of surgical practical except for few honours pharmacology students where hands-on experience is a requirement for a career in pharmacology research. Finally, I carefully assess curriculum content every year to update and replace and this applies to core texts. In terms of delivery technique, conference attendee feedback on my research talks is really informative and detailed and I am always seeking to ensure I am communicating well in terms of slide design, content, timing and use of alternative media. Student feedback is assessed on my modules and changes are frequently by me made in response to valid comment. My teaching has been observed by peers in joint lectures and staff are always happy to share notes on what works and what does not.
The Vet School analyses external examiner feedback very closely and sets a lot of store by their reports. The Vet degree is professionally accredited so currulum content is set down for the most part. The vets have to learn certain pharmacological concepts that do not change, so I have to ensure good balance and to freshen presentation of material every year. I am looking to teach more material in Veterinary Therapeutics for Vets in their clinical years. In 2012, the Vet Heads of Subject met to ensure that there was minimal duplication across Vet modules. In my science teaching, it is closely aligned to my research strengths and I had a free hand to construct the main Drug Discovery module and to assemble lecturing support. This was the first time this had been taught at UCD and the course grows every year in terms of take up from all parts of Science and Medicine. It is enhanced because every year I have case studies of drugs approved that year by the FDA and many students will be aware of some of them from the media. I teach Continuing Professional Development to pharma companies and to the Vet community (online module)and this material requires particular vigilance; the knock-on benefit is that I can then use some of it for undergraduate teaching.
| The Vet School and the Centre for Teaching and Learning provide workshops on best practice which I attend occasionally. However, since my research is the main focus of my UCD work and given my obligations to funding agencies, I am limited timewise to attending just a few courses, compared to many staff in this regard. Still, I love to take inspection copies of new texts to see if I can bring them into my courses and I am always looking for new teaching material from conferences I attend. I am 11 years in UCD and my teaching has improved as I am better at realising what level and quantity of material can be understood by the majority of the class. However, it's only when I examine scripts that I can see if I have succeeded ! Also, I have been an external examiner at top vet schools at Glasgow and London and am currently extern on pharmaceutics courses at DIT and I like to compare their curricula with UCD's and also to assess the achievements of their students with ours.
