International Funding Programmes

The Programme Officer for International Programmes provides advice on, and support for, proposals being submitted to an international sponsor. This includes bodies such as funding councils, government agencies and charitable sponsors which make funding available to Irish institutions.

As the International funding possibilities are vast, the type of opportunities will be dependent on the sponsor’s scheme and its eligibility criteria. It will cover anything from a multi-party collaborative proposal to an individual award.

The biggest source of international funding for research is available through the Framework Programme of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Research and Innovation. The current Framework Programme is called Horizon 2020 (H2020). The International section has a particular focus on opportunities within the Societal Challenges and Industrial Leadership strands of H2020. It also supports proposals to Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) in the Excellence Science strand. Further information and supports for Horizon 2020 funding are available on the research intranet.

Funding from the US is available through a variety of federal agencies and government bodies. The Grants.gov website is where to find and apply for federal grants. Further information and supports on Grants.gov are available on the research intranet.
