Centre for Synthesis and Chemical Biology
Mission Statement
The Centre for Synthesis and Chemical Biology (CSCB) is a collaboration in the chemical sciences between UCD, TCD and the RCSI. The mission of the CSCB is to promote knowledge, health and economic advancement through excellence in the chemical sciences of synthesis and chemical biology, to enrich the nation’s research and educational resource base and to facilitate the development of the pharmaceutical industry in Ireland.
The 2030m2 centre was officially opened in 2005 having received a total of €30.6m in PRTLI funding from Cycles 3 & 4. Since then, it has been awarded over €41m in external funding. There are over 270 active researchers in CSCB, among them 43 PIs, 47 post doctoral researchers and 182 PhD students who have published over 760 peer-reviewed publications. A total of 130 PhD students have graduated from the Institute since its launch.
Key Research Achievements:
- The CSCB Professor of Chemical Biology, Professor Stefan Oscarson was recruited in 2006 and has set up an internationally recognized glycochemistry laboratory.
- The research of Professor Pat Guiry, Director of the CSCB, Professor Paul Murphy who was recently appointed as Head of the School of Chemistry at National University of Ireland, Galway, Dr Matthias Tacke, Dr Kevin O’Connor and others has been widely profiled in the national press and on RTE.
- Celtic Catalysts is an innovative chemical development spin-out company from UCD’s School of Chemistry and Chemical Biology and the CSCB. The company was founded in 2004 by Dr Brian Kelly and CSCB member, Professor Declan Gilheany. The company won the “Rising Star Award” at the BioIndustry Association (Scotland) Thistle Bioscience Forum 2008.
- The CSCB Symposium, which takes place in December each year, provides a forum for dissemination of information on latest research in synthesis and chemical biology and is always well attended (>200 attendees, typically) by senior academics, Principal Researchers, their groups, including PhD and Postdoctoral students and representatives from industry.
- The CSCB has state-of-the-art facilities for Mass Spectrometry, NMR Spectroscopy and Organic Synthesis which are available for use by all CSCB members.
Affiliated Groups / Centres:
- The National Graduate Enhancement Programme (GREP) in (Bio)Pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences (BPS), affiliated with TCD, DCU, UCC, the RCSI and QUB.
