Humanities Institute of Ireland (HII)
Mission Statement:
To serve as a national and international centre for excellence and innovation in the human sciences and as a catalyst for high quality scholarship and research. To attract high quality doctoral students and post-doctoral fellows from within and outside UCD. To develop innovative research programmes linking national and international researchers.
The 560m2 HII building was built in 2002 and to date has received almost €6m in total funding from PRTLI Cycle 3. The HII is currently home to 5 PIs, 5 academics and 30 PhD students. Almost 270 peer reviewed publications have been by published HII-affiliated academics and researchers since its launch and 10 PhD students have graduated under the auspices of the Institute. The HII enjoys an unrivalled 95% completion rate among its doctoral students.
Key Research Achievements:
- Created a dynamic inter-disciplinary platform for humanities researchers
- Established Ireland’s largest and most innovative community of graduate students in the humanities
- Pioneered the use of electronic media for research in the humanities (IVRLA)
- Served as a centre for debate on issues of cultural and social relevance to Ireland’s growth as a knowledge society
