UCD Geary Institute
Mission Statement:
The UCD Geary Institute conducts leading edge research on life course issues and the way public policy affects areas such as early childhood outcomes, youth inequalities, retirement behaviour and educational choices. The hallmarks of the Institute are its cross-disciplinary perspectives on a research agenda that examines effective solutions to economic, political, epidemiological and social questions. The aim of the Institute is to support frontier methods of investigation, leading to the very best in research publication and to provide objective analysis and effective solutions that address the challenges facing policy makers.
The 1,360m2 Geary Institute was built in 2001 having received over €7m in PRTLI funding from Cycles 1 & 3 and since then it has been awarded over €14m in external funding. The Geary Institute is currently home to 9 PIs, 7 post docs and 32 PhD students and its researchers have had over 200 peer-reviewed publications published since 2001.
Roy Geary (1896 – 1983)
The Institute is named in honour of Roy Geary (1896-1983), a UCD graduate and social scientist whose seminal research in the area of statistics, economics, demography and national accounting remains central to study in these fields to this day.
Key Research Achievements:
- The Geary Institute is ranked as 1st in Ireland in the field of economics, 16th in Europe and 59th in World amongst University based centres for economics research as measured on www.repec.org. This places Geary in the top 2% of all listed centres.
- The Institute is the most cited producer of economics research in Ireland as measured by the Social Science Research Network/RePEC online system and in the only Irish research institute in this discipline to make the global ‘top 5%’ of research institutes.
- The attraction of a U.S Nobel Laureate in Economics, Professor James Heckman, to the post of Professor of Science and Society at the Geary Institute. As part of a major investment in ‘Human Development and Public Policy’ by PRTLI and Atlantic Philanthropies, Professor Heckman visited UCD in June 2006 to accept the Ulysses medal for his work in economic science.
- The presentation of output by Geary researchers in leading international peer-reviewed journals including the top 4 ranked journals in economics, the top ranked journal in statistics, the top ranked journal in public health and the top field journals in major areas of economic and social sciences.
- The Geary Institute has formed a five-year association with the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, through the National Science Foundation Multidisciplinary Program in Inequality and Social Policy.
- The Institute has also fostered an alliance with the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago for graduate training and professional development programmes.
