Mission Statement
To find solutions to key challenges in sustainable energy, climate change, natural hazards and nature conservation that are relevant for Ireland and contribute to global understanding.
The Earth Systems Institute research capacity is organised around 5 centres:

- Bio-Systems
- Energy Research
- Urban Systems
- Policy and Integration
Projected Outcomes:
Research at the Earth Systems Institute is about: creating knowledge and insights that did not exist before, finding new and sustainable ways of living on the earth; expanding the capacity in business, academe and government to innovate and to transform challenges into opportunities; bringing insights from science to inform policy and the public. Outcomes will include:
- Better efficiency and higher reliability in developing, delivering and
distributing renewable energy, capturing and storing carbon, reducing
emissions of greenhouse gasses
- More energy and carbon efficient buildings and transport
- Better ways of planning the use of our land, so as to enhance quality of life, diminish environmental impact, and reduce waste.
- Innovations in policy and governance that enhance economic performance and environmental quality.
- A policy system and public that are enriched by better and more timely understanding of the latest knowledge and insights from science in regard to earth systems
- A new generation of earth-systems related businesses and jobs that are a product of Irish innovation and capacity building.
- Better prediction of the future of biological change by better understanding the past and present
- Reducing geohazards, through better understanding of how earth systems components act together to increase danger
