Urban Institute of Ireland (UII)
Mission Statement
The Urban Institute unites engineers and planners, architects and geographers, economists and scientists, all with a view to finding innovative ways of tackling the challenges of sustainable development.
The 820m2 building was built in 2002 having received over €6m in funding from PRTLI Cycles 1 & 2. Since then, it has been awarded almost €14m in external funding. 85 PIs, along with 7 PhD students and 5 post docs work closely in the UII and have published over 500 publications since 2002. In addition, 39 PhD students have graduated from the Institute since its launch.
Key Research Achievements:
- PhD programme in Sustainable Development: The PhD programme in Sustainable Development will produce graduates who are trained to apply technical and policy tools from different disciplines to complex problems for which there is no known solution.
- Urban Environment Project: understanding the link between development, land-use change and associated economic and environmental impact within urban regions.
- “HAPPINESS (Happiness, Political Institutions, Natural Environment and Space) - A comparative analysis of the influence of environmental conditions, environmental regimes and political context on subjective well-being” European Science Foundation Eurocores programme.
- Energy Efficiency Regulations for New Dwellings and Options for Improvement.
- Passive homes: Guidelines for the design and construction of passive house dwellings in Ireland.
