Professor Barry Smyth holds the Digital Chair of Computer Science within the UCD School of Computer Science and Informatics. He leads the CLARITY programme in Sensor Web technologies which has been awarded major funding by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI).

The development and evaluation of practical solutions, that have a strong theoretical foundation, is a consistent theme across all of his research and the work of his research group. He has published approximately 300 scientific articles and, in addition to receiving a number best/distinguished paper awards from a wide range of leading international conferences, Professor Smyth has also successfully commercialised his personalisation research. In 1999 Professor Smyth co-founded ChangingWorlds Ltd, as a UCD spin-out to bring personalization technologies to the mobile sector. ChangingWorlds now employs over 120 people in offices in Ireland, Asia and the US and continues to collaborate closely with Professor Smyth. In 2006, in recognition of his commercialisation activities, Prof Smyth received the Enterprise Ireland Informatics Commercialisation Award and was a finalist in the International category of the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.
In April 2008, it was announced that CLARITY, a joint UCD-DCU-industry programme in Sensor Web technologies led by Prof Smyth was to be awarded €11.8m by Science Foundation Ireland to establish a Centre for Science, Engineering and Technology. With additional funding from the industrial partners, the total funding is €16.5m.
