Diabetes is a major problem globally. In Ireland it consumes about 10 per cent of the total healthcare spend and the disease is a major problem in developing and developed countries alike. Of those who suffer from the condition, some 25-35 per cent will go on to develop diabetic kidney disease, also known as diabetic nephropathy. This is one of the most serious health complications of diabetes, and is the main cause of end-stage renal disease, for which patients will require dialysis, or even transplantation.

In Professor Catherine Godson’s lab the very latest techniques in molecular cell biology are being used as part of a unique multidisciplinary approach in an attempt to understand the cellular events that make a person susceptible to diabetic nephropathy. Some people, despite very poor management of their blood pressure and blood glucose levels, will not develop diabetic nephropathy, while others, who are very well-managed, do. Professor Godson’s research looks at what genes are switched on in the diabetic kidney, how these genes contribute to the development of diabetic nephropathy, and whether there is any route to develop new therapies.

Professor Catherine Godson is also part of the multi-disciplinary team that has been attempting to unravel the story of inflammation and the role played by lipoxins in regulating the process. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the resolution of inflammation could bring benefits to chronic conditions such as atherosclerosis and colitis.
