Professor Ciaran Regan

Professor Ciaran Regan’s main area of research relates to understanding the mechanisms of long-term memory. His ground-breaking research is opening up new approaches to detecting and treating conditions such as schizophrenia and depression through the improvement of current anti-depressant and anti-psychotic drug therapies.

Professor Regan is co-founder of a successful UCD spin-out company, Berand Neuropharmacology, which develops novel therapeutics for the treatment of autism and obesity. His success in establishing strategic and collaborative links with industry in the commercialisation of neuroscience research has brought him recognition and awards such as the NovaUCD 2007 Innovation Award.

In 2003, Professor Regan set up an interdisciplinary research cluster, the Applied Neurotherapeutic Research Group (ANRG) which aims to look at the molecular and structural changes in nerve cells necessary for the formation of long-term memory.

Professor Regan’s work has been recognised through awards such as the Royal Irish Academy Medal for Achievement in Pharmacology and Toxicology. He is also author of Intoxicating Minds, a text for the general reader on the role of mind-altering drugs in society.
