Denis Shields is Professor of Clinical Bioinformatics at the UCD Conway Institute of Biomolecular and Biomedical Research. He leads a groundbreaking new PhD programme in Bioinformatics and Computational Biomedicine.

As well as being project leader, Professor Shields also teaches on the programme and runs a ‘Journal Club’ consisting of tutorials in which students discuss published research papers.
Professor Shields has had numerous research papers published in recent years. His research interests include identifying functional human protein variants that alter risk of disease and bioinformatic discovery of bioactive novel peptides.
He is president of the Irish Society of Human Genetics and sits on the committee of MORGAM, an international research project exploring the role of genetics in cardiovascular disease.
