The behaviour of fluid molecules within confined spaces is the primary research interest of Professor Don MacElroy. A current research thread involves developing extremely fine membranes that can trap and store CO2. Such research could lead to the development of technologies that help reduce greenhouse gases.

In November 2007, Professor MacElroy was appointed lead Principal Investigator (PI) of the Advanced Biomimetic Materials for Solar Energy Conversion strategic research cluster, which received a €5.3m grant from SFI. The cluster combines expertise from UCD, UL and DCU, as well as industry partners Airtricity, OBD-Tec and Celtic Catalysts.

As well as being Head of School and having teaching responsibilities, he regularly sits on peer-review panels for funding agencies and journals.
