National Graduate Enhancement Programme in (Bio)pharmaceutical and Pharmacological Sciences
The National Graduate Enhancement Programme (NGEP) aims to address the national manpower crisis in (Bio)pharmaceutical Sciences by providing 4th Level graduate students with high quality training in a structured PhD programme.
About NGEP
The objective of the programme is to provide highly trained 4th level graduate students in the area of (bio)pharmaceuticals and pharmacological sciences and to foster inter-institutional collaborations and access to infrastructure. The success of this consortium is critical for the national development of the pharmaceutical industry.
Funding
NGEP is funded under PRTLI Cycle 4.
Key areas of research
- UCD will contribute to the following research programmes:
- Synthesis and chemical biology
- Chemical and bioprocess engineering
- Clinical pharmacology, including novel animal models of disease
- Biotechnology and pharmacology (proteomics and glycobiology)
- Drug delivery
- Animal toxicology
Outputs - UCD
- 9 PhDs started in September 2008 and the final one commenced in January 2009 following a national and international selection process.
- The Thematic Doctoral Programme in (Bio)pharmaceutical and pharmacological sciences went live in UCD September 2008.
- A joint UCD/TCD graduate programme, Dublin Chemistry, will provide a structured programme of high quality courses to support the research of its PhD students and many of the courses are available to the NGEP in (Bio)pharmaceuticals and Pharmacological Sciences.
- UCD has been appointed the NGEP co-ordinator and programme manager.
Collaboration
UCD leads the collaborative initiative which brings together Trinity College Dublin, Dublin City University, University College Cork, Queen's University, Belfast and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
