SFI Research Centres link scientists and engineers in partnerships across academia and industry to:
- address crucial research questions
- foster the development of new and existing Irish-based technology companies
- attract industry that could make an important contribution to Ireland and its economy
- expand educational and career opportunities in Ireland in science and engineering.
UCD is leading one such centre called Insight. The Insight Centre for Data Analytics is a joint initiative between researchers at UCD, NUI Galway, UCC, DCU, and other partner institutions which brings together a critical mass of more than 200 researchers, together with more than 30 partner companies, to develop a new generation of data analytics technologies in a number of key application areas.
Insight's research focus encompasses a broad range of data analytics technologies and challenges including: machine learning and data mining, media analytics and optimization, decision analytics, personalization and recommender systems, the semantic web and linked data, and the sensor web.
UCD also hosts the Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geosciences (iCRAG) in partnership with TCD, DIAS, NUI Galway and UCC. iCRAG brings together Ireland’s leading geoscientists on issues underpinning economic development, such as security of supply of groundwater and energy, and de-risking mineral, oil and gas exploration.
