Career Development Support

The Career Development Centre aims to provide a professional Career Education, Information and Guidance Service to support post-doctoral researchers in making effective career decisions and managing an effective transition to the next phase of their career development.

Services

Career Consultations            

Individual confidential career consultations are available by appointment with the Career Development Adviser and typically last 40-50 minutes. This is an in-depth meeting designed to help you explore career related issues, such as how to go about making a career decision, understanding career options, how to relate information to your own needs and circumstances and make decisions about your career choice and employment opportunities. All contact with the Career Development Centre remains confidential and no sharing of information will take place without your permission to release details to a third party. An agreed summary of the main points and areas arising from the interview will be agreed between you and the Career Development Adviser.

Career Seminars           

The Career Development Centre has developed a series of bespoke career development seminars for post-doctoral researchers which include, but is not restricted to:

  • Accessing the hidden job market
  • Making your case – translating your experience into future potential
  • Career related research – how to source reliable information on career issues
  • Making effective applications  (CV Templates - Building a Professional Presentation)
  • Interview strategy
  • Interview skills practice
  • Strategic career planning

Details of these seminars are available on this website and they will be scheduled regularly throughout the year

Employer Engagement      

The Career Development Adviser will actively pursue employers to engage with post-doctoral researchers to develop awareness of appropriate career opportunities.

Who may use these services?

Current, recent and intending post-doctoral researchers at UCD are entitled to use the full range of services, with priority given to current researchers.

What you can expect from the Career Development Centre

We operate in accordance with the AGCAS Code of Practice on Guidance, so you can expect the career education, information and guidance provided to be:

  •  Focussed on your needs
  •  Non directive
  •  Underpinned by equality of opportunity
  •  Accessible to eligible users.

What is expected from our users

  • Honesty and integrity at all stages of the process
  • Attend in good time for interviews and group sessions
  • Inform us in good time if you are unable to attend any appointment or workshop
  • Complete any preparatory work requested, e.g. prior to a consultation or workshop
  • Be prepared to recognize and work through the guidance process
  • Take responsibility for making your own decisions, researching your career choices and taking action to realise your career goals.

User feedback/improvement

The Career Development Centre is developing a system of continuous quality improvement and therefore has systems designed to capture feedback. We ask you to be patient if asked to complete feedback forms for different services on offer. In addition to formal feedback we are interested in your views on any aspect of the service, comments should be made directly to the Career Development Adviser for Post-Doctoral Researchers.

Should there be cause for complaint, this should be made in writing to the Director of the Career Development Centre.
