UCD Office of Research Ethics

An Oifig Eitic Thaighde UCD

Welcome from the REC Chair

On behalf of the UCD Research Ethics Committee and the Office of Research Ethics I would like to welcome you to the new Research Ethics website.

The UCD Research Ethics Committee (REC) derives its operating authority from the Governing Authority. The REC oversees, and advises upon, policy regarding the work carried out by the three sub-committees. The functions of REC include approval and dissemination of best practice in research.

It is imperative that the ethical aspects of all research carried out by UCD staff and students are addressed in a professional manner, comply with UCD’s ethical standards, and abide by any or all relevant regulatory requirements. The REC supports this through approval, advisory and review processes. The sub-committees have, over the ten years since the REC’s establishment, processed almost 3,000 applications from UCD Researchers across all Colleges. Researchers are further supported by relevant Policies and Guidelines which are updated regularly.  The confidence of funding authorities during grant application review is enhanced by the support offered to Researchers by the REC.
In addition to the work of the REC and its sub-committees on behalf of the university,  the Office of Research Ethics also provides excellent support for staff and students including Ethics Advisory Consultations and Research Ethics Training across a broad range of disciplines.
There is an ethical dimension to all research and I trust that the REC through its activities will continue to be a support to the Community.
