Human Research Ethics Committee - Sciences (LS)

The Human Research Ethics Committee - Sciences (LS) reviews applications for human research from UCD Schools within the following Colleges & Institutions:

College of Health & Agricultural Sciences

College of Engineering and Architecture

College of Science

Charles Institute of Dermatology

The Conway Institute

The Earth Institute

The Institute of Food & Health

The HREC - Sciences ensures that research is conducted according to best practice and to:

  • Maintain ethical standards of practice in research;
  • Protect human subjects of research from harm;
  • Ensure that the practice of fully informed consent is observed;
  • Preserve the subjects’ rights;
  • Provide reassurance to the public and outside bodies that all the above are being done.

It is the aim of the HREC- Sciences to facilitate, not hinder, valuable research and to protect researchers from unjustified criticism and/or legal action.

Undergraduate & Taught Masters Research Ethics Committees

Currently there are two school based sub-committees reporting directly to HREC-LS:

Undergraduate Research Ethics Committee - School of Medicine (UREC-SM) - This sub-committee reviews all applications for full review and exemptions submitted as part of undergraduate programmes requirements within the School of Medicine and Medical Science. Applications for an exemption from full review from undergraduate students should be submitted on UREC-TMREC Exemption Form by email to urec.sm@ucd.ie  .

Undergraduate Research Ethics Committee - School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Sports Science (UREC-SPHPSS): This sub-committee reviews all applications for full review and exemptions submitted as part of undergraduate programmes requirements within the School of Public Health, Physiotherapy and Population Science. Please contact the school office for forms and more information.

Taught Masters Research Ethics Committee - School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems (TMREC - SNMHS): This sub-committee reviews all applications (full review & exemptions) submitted as part of graduate programmes requirements within the School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems. Please email researchethics.nmhs@ucd.ie for details regarding submission process and specific requirements.
