Influenza A(H1N1)vUCD Student Residences in coordination with the College has a comprehensive plan in place to respond to the potential threat from Influenza A(H1N1)/Swine Flu to the health of students and staff, and the operation of the university. The management of this plan is overseen by the UCD Flu Response Team which consists of representatives from across the university.
Please read the following information for general guidance on dealing with Influenza A(H1N1) /Swine Flu.
CURRENT HSE MEDICAL ADVICE
Preventing the spread of germs is the single most effective way to slow the spread of influenza or flu.
You should always:
- Use tissues to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze
- Place used tissues in a bin as soon as possible
- Ensure everyone washes their hands regularly with soap and water
- Clean surfaces regularly to get rid of germs
If you think you have influenza, please avoid close contact with others, stay at home and seek medical advice by phoning the reception of your accommodation office who will contact a doctor on your behalf.
Symptoms of Influenza A(H1N1) include:
- Fever
- Headache
- General aches and pains
- Fatigue / weakness
- Extreme exhaustion
- Stuffy nose / sore throat / sneezing
- Chest discomfort
Response to Suspected Case
If it is suspected that a resident has influenza then they should ensure the following:
1. That the resident does not attend class/work.
2. That the resident stays in their accommodation whilst avoiding /minimising direct contact with other persons.
3. That a GP is contacted for further advice. A list of GP’s is available from UCD Village and Residential Services. GP contact should be coordinated through the UCD Reception Desk.
4. In all such cases UCD Residential Services, UCD Village, and Belfield Management (where applicable) must be informed of the suspected case and the outcome of the medical advice.
If any students with suspected or known influenza exhibit any of the following symptoms then a GP must be contacted by telephone immediately.
- Shortness of breath at rest or while doing very little
- Painful or difficult breathing
- Coughing up bloody sputum
- Drowsiness, disorientation or confusion
- Fever for 4-5 days and not starting to get better (or getting worse)
- Starting to feel better then developing high fever and feeling unwell again
Any queries relating to medical issues should be directed to a GP by telephoning the reception office in your residence. The staff on duty will contact a GP or call the 24 Hour HSE Flu Information Line Freephone 1800 941100. UCD Residential Services, UCD Village, and Belfield Management (where applicable) must be informed immediately of all known and suspected influenza cases, and the advice given by attending GP’s.
