Training

The Safety Office offers a range of training courses related to safety and health at work. An indicative list is outlined below. Courses can be tailored to suit a particular groups needs and further training courses can be designed or sourced as required.

Certificate In Health and Safety
Every year the Safety Office sponsors a number of staff on this course which is run by the Centre For Safety and Health at Work. This course is run on Friday mornings during term time. Places are limited and approval from an employees Head Of School / Unit Manager is required before the Safety Office can offer sponsorship.

First Aid
Occupational first aid training is offered by the Safety Office to those persons willing to act as nominated first aiders within their working area. This course takes three days with an assessment of competency on the last day of the course. Certification is valid for three years following which a one day refresher course must be undertaken to extend the certification further (arranged by the Safety Office). As part of the course trainees will be briefed on how to operate the various Automatic External Defibrillators that are located at various locations throughout the University. Places are limited and approval from the relevant Head Of School / Unit Manager is required before the Safety Office can offer a place on this course.

It is also possible for those persons with an interest in first aid to complete a one day basic first aid training course.

Manual Handling
Manual handling training is offered to all staff and students. The training takes approximately 2-3 hours and provides participants with information on the theory and practices of safe lifting.

Fire Fighting
A short three hour training course that outlines basic fire safety; the different types of fires and the use and different types of portable fire extinguishers. The theory session is followed by a practical demonstration that involves participants fighting fires under controlled conditions.

Fire Marshall Training
This is a short (30 minute) session that is designed to provide those persons nominated as fire marshals with the information required to fulfil this role.

Workstation / Visual Display Unit Setup
This is a one hour session designed to train participants in how to set up their workstation ergonomically. This training session can be given to a group of persons working together in an area within their working area and can be tied into a full ergonomic assessment of their workstation.
