One of the most rapidly advancing areas of science today is in the field of biomolecular and biomedical research. Molecules are the fundamental element of biological systems and discoveries of how they work are instrumental for expanding our understanding of health and disease in all forms of life.
At the UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science, over 30 academic staff with international standing are focused on three key areas of biomolecular research: Infection Biology, Structural Biology and Disease Mechanisms, which comprises Neuroscience, Cardiovascular Disease, Diabetes and Cancer. The school is highly research intensive and special emphasis is placed on translating fundamental discoveries to a greater understanding of health and disease, with the ultimate aim of informing novel drug discovery. The diversity of our expertise is a major facilitator for interdisciplinary scholarship and research and provides the School with a unique forum to investigate biological systems at molecular, cellular and whole organism levels.
The School places considerable emphasis on teaching and learning at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. By harnessing the complementary energies of research and teaching, we produce confident, highly skilled graduates with the potential to make major contributions to the knowledge economy in Ireland and abroad. A challenging and enjoyable learning experience provides first-rate training for a career in research or in the biotechnology, medical or pharmaceutical industry.
Exciting opportunities and choice are features of our undergraduate degree programmes. Our BSc degree courses are in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Genetics, Microbiology, Neuroscience and Pharmacology. We provide taught MSc courses in Biotechnology and in Biotechnology and Business, in association with the UCD Smurfit School of Business.
The School boasts a large cohort of graduate students enrolled in high quality structured M.Sc. (by research) and Ph.D. programmes that provide training in specific, state-of-the-art and generic research skills. Graduate students constitute a significant and valued presence within our School and we are dedicated to the continuing development of our Ph.D. programmes and to enhancing the graduate’s training experience.
The School is committed to promoting greater internationalisation of its teaching and research programmes. We actively participate in student exchanges at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We welcome applications from international students for undergraduate courses (full courses or selected modules), masters courses (taught and by research) and Ph.D. programmes.
Please take time to browse our website for additional information on the range of research and teaching activities in our School. Please contact us directly for any further information or for informal discussion.
