Within your Research programme, it is now possible to undertake taught modules which will assist you in developing your knowledge and skills base. It is important to identify the modules most appropriate to your needs with your supervisor. Your School may recommend or require specific courses.
The overall credit value of the UCD Structured PhD consists of a minimum of 270 credits and a maximum of 360 credits in total. In addition, 240 of this credit total must consist of original doctoral research. The remaining credits may be achieved through accredited modules. Please note there is no minimum requirement with regard to the taught Module element.
PhD students are expected to undertake their programme of study across two stages.
Stage 1 (advanced education in training and research) normally comprises 90 credits and will normally be completed by a full-time student in one calendar year. Stage 2 (to consist mainly of original doctoral research) normally comprises 180-270 credits and should be completed by a full-time student in 2-3 calendar years.
Therefore, a full time student will complete 360 credits in a four-year PhD and 270 credits for a three-year PhD.
