Research in SBBS

There is a strong research emphasis within the School of Biomolecular & Biomedical Science.  With a reputation for a consistent publication record, large-scale funding and success in commercial and collaborative endeavours, the school is now ready to build on successes to date with the establishment of 3 research themes:

 D.Walsh & D. Selkoe, 2004

Structural Biology

Candida parapsilosis colonies with different morphologies by Tristan Rossignol
Yeast Candida parapsilosis undergoing spontaneously colony phenotype switching when growing on ypd medium containing phloxine B. Three different phenotypes distinguishable by colony morphology are visible on this picture.

 Infection Biology
 Different Looks by Yolanda Alvarez
We are performing a mutagenesis screen for mutations affecting eye development. In the picture a wild type 5 day old zebrafish larva with two normal eyes on the right, and three different mutants: joined-eyes at the bottom, four eyes on the left and a cyclop at the top.

Disease Mechanisms :
(i) Neuroscience
(ii) Diabetes & Vascular Biology
(iii) Cancer

In addition to information about our new themes, you will find our recent publications, inventions & patents, further information about our research facilities and equipment, and a beautiful display of science meeting art in this section.
