Zebrafish are the animal model used by Dr. Breandan Kennedy's team to study retinal development and disease. The facilities comprise of:
- AHAB recirculating water system with filtration, sterilization and automatic adjustment of water parameters (pH, conductivity, temperature);
- Housing for over 20,000 adult fish in 1-, 3-, and 10-litre tanks;
- ZMOD rack housing up to 12,000 larvae and juvenile fish;
- A separate benchtop AHAB system for quarantine of imported fish.
A recent purchase for the School is a Wyatt Technologies multi-angle laser light scattering platform which, via a state-of-the-art liquid handling platform, will be allied with an asymmetric flow-field-flow fractionation module. This delivers rapid, automated, determinations of the molecular mass, oligomeric state, hydrodynamic radius of a wide range of biological macromolecules, including proteins, nucleic acids, virus particles, glyans and complexes thereof. Critically, it gives the functionality of 10 analytical ultracentrifuges for the cost/footprint of only 1. This is likely to have profound effects on the way protein science is performed in SBBS and UCD.
