Research Interests

The mechanisms by which microorganisms biosynthesise halogenated secondary metabolites is intriguing, and one of my main interests is the biochemical mechanisms involved in this process. Currently there are projects underway to determine the biosynthesis of rumbrin in Auxarthron umbrinum and chlorotetaine biosynthesis in Bacillus subtilis.

Also of interest is the biodegradation of halogenated compounds by bacteria and bacterial biofilms. There are several projects ongoing in my lab investigating the degradation of 4-fluoroglutamate by bacteria and the degradation of fluorinated aromatics, which we can conveniently monitor with 19F NMR.

The use of animals in drugs testing is contentious and efforts are being made through the REACH initiative to minimise their involvement. To this end I am interested in employing microorganisms to understand the metabolism of fluorinated drugs, and reducing the use of animals in the early stages of drug development.

We have facilities for culturing microorganisms, extraction and purification of proteins, analytical and preparative HPLC and GC-MS.

Secondary School visits:
1. I visited Folye College, Derry, N.I. to give an overview of entrance requirements and procedures.
2. I was invited to attend the prize night for St Colman's College, Newry, N.I.

Hosted students from seondary schools, post-leaving certificate college and other EU universities. I have also placed students in my lab through the EU's Leonardo programme.

I was interviewed for the 'Science Spinning' radio programme hosted by Sean Duke (http://sciencespin.podomatic.com/entry/2010-11-22T03_35_49-08_00)

University Open Days (2001-2011). I have manned the Department of Industrial Microbiology/School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science stand almost each year since joining UCD.
