Professor Paul Engel BA MA DPhil
Teaching Interests:
I have taught virtually every aspect of biochemistry to a diverse range of student audiences - science students, medical students, nursing students, chemical engineers. My strong belief is that it is better to teach a little and be understood than to cover vast amounts of impressive material that totally loses your audience. I strive to get students to think rather than to memorise. I have had a lifelong suspicion of the practical class, unthinkingly used as required suffering by many teachers, while the students aim to get through if at all possible without deploying the cerebral hemispheres at all. 'Dry' practicals which force the student to confront the issues are worth far more.
I have trained a large number of Ph. D. students and hope that they have all acquired a broad range of techniques, but above all an ability to think critically and creatively.
