Research Interests
| Our research interests centre on the application of proteomics to disease characterization and identification of drug targets. Platelets are known to play an important role in cardiovascular diseases and stroke however, current tests cannot predict platelet function or guide clinical therapy. Platelet aggregation and secretion assays from platelets have generated a wealth of information but these are complex processes, and platelets may be activated by different agonists utilizing multiple pathways. We apply proteomic technologies to the analysis of whole platelets, platelet subfractions as well as studying platelets from groups of patients in whom functional changes are suspected. We also specialise in applying immunoprecipitations to mass spectrometry and have a number of successful collaborations in this area. One outcome of such studies is the observation that platelets express proteins which are integral to many previously unattributed signalling pathways and we are currently investigating the activity of these pathways in platelets and megakaryocytes.
