Teaching & Learning in SBBS

UCD as an institution strives to provide the ideal environment to learn, discover and innovate.  The School recognises the importance of teaching and learning as a fundamental process for training future scientists and the provision of well-qualified graduates who will feed into the School's graduate training programmes, as well as the industrial sector.

The School provides exciting opportunities in the undergraduate degree programmes it offer.  Further details about the degree programmes offered by SBBS may be found here

Key features of SBBS Teaching & Learning include:

  • The School currently co-ordinates over 100 modules for Stages 1-4 of the Science undergraduate curriculum (2010/2011).  A key T&L success for the School has been its rationalisation of modules and in the elimination of overlap between courses, with the result that several modules are core for more than one discipline.
  • The School delivers modules to students engaged in programmes in Agriculture, Biomedical Health & Life Science, Food Science, Medicine, Nursing and Physiotherapy.
  • SBBS modules provide training in theoretical and technical aspects of each subject.  Students attend lectures and class practicals that combine traditional laboratory experiments with computer-based instruction.  The number of students registered for each module varies from 20 to 260.
  • A key component of the SBBS undergraduate degree programmes is the Stage 4 research project.  Over 12 weeks, students are accommodated in the laboratories of SBBS academic staff and other UCD academic staff.  In certain courses, students are facilitated off-campus in industrial laboratories and we have recently introduced an exchange programme with the University of Copenhagen for students to complete their project abroad during Semester 1.
