The third CSET Thesis in 3, which took place on the 25th October, as part of Innovation Dublin 2012, showcased research from 18 students coming from the 9 SFI funded CSETS (CLARITY, SBI, CNGL, CRANN, Lero, BDI, CTVR, APC and DERI). This event follows on from the success of the “CSET Thesis in 3” held at The Mansion House in November 2011 and The Sugar Club in 2010. Over 250 people attended on the night, with three main prize winners. A judging panel, which consisted of high profile individuals from industry, the media and state agencies picked the researcher who presented their research most effectively for a non-specialist audience. The audience were also given the opportunity to vote for their favourite presenter.

During the course of the evening, which was open to the general public, the audience heard, in bite-sized chunks, about the current world-class research happening in Ireland. Researchers presented their doctoral research in a “Thesis in 3” concept, based on the Pecha Kucha and Ignite series formats. Contestants presented their work in a series of concise, rapidly paced talks consisting of 3 slides of precisely 1 minute each. This year's event also included talks by principal investigators from each of the CSETs. This allowed well established researchers to compare themselves to the new crop of up and coming researchers.

The overall winner of the event was Deirdre Cogan from CLARITY: Centre for Sensor Web Technologies with her presentation entitled “Protecting our Environment – Minus the Wellies”. The runner-up was SBI's own, Thomas Schwarzl, with his presentation entitled “Stem Cell Therapy with Bob”. The audience prize went to Emanuele Di Pascale with his presentation entitled “The “Buy Local” Paradigm for Next Generation Networks”. Deirdre will now go on to present her talk at the SFI summit which will take place on 12th -13th November in The Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone.

SBI's Education and Outreach Officer and co-organiser of the event, Philip Smyth, had this to say, "Condensing something extremely complex, like a PhD, in to a package that anybody can understand is incredibly difficult. To do that with a topic like Systems Biology is even harder. All of the speakers did fantastically well but I think Deirdre and Tom stood out as the two who understood what the audience wanted. We're very proud of all of the speakers from SBI and we wish Deirdre all the best at the SFI Summit."

Tin3 was co-ordinated by Aoibheann Bird from CLARITY, Cara Greene from CNGL and Philip Smyth from Systems Biology Ireland.
