Welcome to the School of Information and Library Studies

As the Head of School at SILS, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our school. We are the only academic institution in Ireland to provide undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes leading to research and professionally accredited qualifications in Information and Library Studies.

Our undergraduate degree programmes provide students with practical and theoretical knowledge and skills that can be applied in many different careers, including Information Managers, Librarians and Information Architects. It is possible to obtain a BA, BA (Computer Science) or BSocSci degree in either Information and Social Computing or Social Media (as part of the BSocSci degree).

Our Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) and the Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Studies (GradDipLIS) programmes allow students to earn degrees that are accredited by professional organizations and internationally recognised. These degrees qualify students to work as library and information professionals in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and throughout Europe. Recent graduates have dynamic careers as Chief Information Officers, Library Directors and Knowledge Managers.

Research-oriented postgraduate degree programmes include an MA, M Litt, and a PhD in Information Studies. Students who have graduated with these degrees work as research officers in government agencies, and as university lecturers.

Current research at SILS investigates ways that information is organized, searched, shared and created within and across various organizations in industry, academia, government and medicine, as well as in everyday life. We also investigate how technology may facilitate and/or impede ways that information is organized, searched, shared and created. Our research informs our teaching, bringing innovative knowledge into the classroom, and provides academic colleagues, businesses, government agencies and professional organizations with new ways of approaching challenges.

If you are interested in participating in our vibrant community of students, scholars and professionals, I cordially invite you to contact us.
