Never Too Many Cooks: The Evolving Nature of Scientific Authorship
Blaise Cronin
13 December, 2011 at 5.00pm in SILS, Room 107
Reception for SILS Alumni, SILS Staff and Students, and Friends of SILS immediately following the presentation.
Talk abstract
Research and writing have been de-coupled; it is no longer necessary to craft a chapter, page, paragraph or even a sentence to earn one’s authorial spurs. In some fields, the author is no longer an individual but a corporation, ensemble or collective; the Romanticized notion of the isolated ego, the individual genius, has been rendered passé. In contemporary science ‘authorship’ has been re-framed as ‘contributorship,’ with specialized inputs of different kinds, ranging from conceptualization through experimental design and data analysis to drafting, potentially warranting a byline. For those who don’t achieve author status, there is always the acknowledgement, an often overlooked but potentially illuminating source of insight into the effectively invisible contributions of the numerous peers, trusted assessors, and professional colleagues who help keep the wheels of science spinning. In this talk Blaise will: (a) consider what it means be an author in an age of hyperauthorship and team-based science; (b) outline new forms of publishing (e.g., blogs, vanity presses); and (c) show how the journal article’s paratext reveals the importance and pervaisiveness of articulation work.
