Who is the Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Studies (GradDipLIS) for?
The GradDipLIS programme is designed to prepare university graduates for professional careers in library and information work
What will I learn?
The GradDipLIS provides an opportunity for advanced graduate study and an introduction to research in Information and Library Studies. The programmes require a high level of commitment by students to the inter-disciplinary content, which spans theory and practice, drawing on knowledge gained in their primary degree.
How will I benefit?
The SILS GradDipLIS is a highly regarded, long-established qualification, giving you access to a wide range of careers in Irish libraries and other sectors of the Information industry.
What is the programme about?
SILS also offers a Master of Library and Information Studies degree, which requires the submission of a minor thesis or capstrone project, and provides an opportunity to undertake more advanced level study and research in library and information studies. All eligible applicants are advised to apply for the MLIS in preference to the GradDipLIS.
The reasons for doing this include:
- Greater freedom in choice of modules
- Opportunities to do research
- Greater international recognition of the MLIS degree
- A student who is registered for the MLIS may apply for the GradDipLIS as an Exit qualification after successful completion of the taught modules, if they wish to do so
- Transfer from the GradDipLIS to the MLIS programme within the same academic year is sometimes possible, but depends on high achievement in Semester 1 assessments
- Because of the flexibility between the MLIS and the GradDipLIS we treat applicants for the MLIS and the GradDipLIS equally, including offering an MLIS place to some applicants who apply for the GradDipLIS, if they are deemed to be suitable candidates.
