Research
SILS has a strong tradition in research. Academic staff publish in leading peer-reviewed international journals and conferences. UCD recently commissioned a bibliometric study focusing on articles published between 1998 and 2007 by academic staff in UCD schools. The report concluded that the impact of SILS’ journals articles between 1998 and 2007, compared to the world citation average was significantly above average in two subfields: “information science and librarianship” and “computer science and information systems”. The impact indicators reported are 1.98 and 1.48 in these subfields respectfully. The world average impact indicator across all disciplines is 1.0. Details regarding staff members’ publications can be found on their websites.
Academic staff also apply to a variety of national and international funding agencies and foundations for research grants. In the current academic year all academic staff not on sabbatical either applied for external funding and/or were leading externally funded research projects.
Graduate students are also encouraged to collaborate with academic staff on research projects and receive academic credit as well. More information is available in the descriptions of Research Practice, Advanced Research Practice 1 and Advanced Research Practice 2.
All graduate students in the MA, MLitt and Ph.D. programmes are required to complete a thesis under the supervision of academic staff members. MLIS students have the option of completing a thesis or capstone project. Titles of recent theses are available here.
Research conducted by academic staff in SILS currently focuses on several main themes:
- Information Behaviour
- Information Society
- Digital Libraries
- Collaboration and Technology to Support Collaboration
