Biography:
I study information behaviour in
everyday life settings, including the workplace, and have been invited to share
my work at various European Union conferences.
My research into the information worlds of older
adults engaged in serious leisure (e.g., amateur genealogy, lacemaking)
explores the information worlds developed through leisure participation and the
connections among a chosen hobby, community development, information literacy,
new technologies for social participation, and social inclusion. My research with older adult hobbyists has
shown they are self-taught learners who keenly share their learning with
others. My findings have influenced my
work with students, particularly the consideration of contexts that enable
students to excel at learning and engage them in constructing learning to meet
individual needs. |
Research Interests
| Library and Information Science (LIS) is a diverse, interdisciplinary field, in which human interaction with information is central. I study the particular area of Information Behaviour in everyday life settings, including such contexts as leisure, health, education, and the workplace, and I have been invited to share my work at European Union conferences. Teaching Philosophy
| Supporting empowerment through education, I advocate a social constructivist approach, placing the learner at the centre of learning as an active agent in their learning. My role is to facilitate students' development of critical scholarship in this process, encouraging them to learn to question and solve problems in reasoned ways. |

Enhancement of Teaching
| When people see a direct application/particular relevance of an innovation in their own lives, they may adopt the innovation. I continuously try to bring innovation to meet the needs of my students in their assessment, e.g., hands-on activities such as observation. I encourage students to experiment with learning/assessment, essential for meeting fast-paced change in the workplace; e.g.,Social Computing & Media, students work in groups to create mobile phone applications to solve real-life problems (way-finding on campus, tracking bus routes); blogs, both online and via mobile phones, facilitate student reflection on learning in various modules. Collaboration among students and me supports assessment of learning. I have initiated student focus group feedback to facilitate programme development in our school, and progress procedures/forms to facilitate research students/staff. Workshops have facilitated self-reflection on assessment/delivery approaches, e.g.,Problem-based Learning Summer School (2009). Student feedback in individual modules provides a valuable means of continuous teaching improvement. Formal end-of-term questionnaires are supplemented by weekly and midterm check-ins with students to gauge understanding and efficacy of various teaching approaches. Approaches are then adapted immediately to respond to students' learning needs. |

| My teaching approaches address not only learning milestones specified by subject/school curriculum, but also, importantly, the individual learning needs of my students. As a result, I take a blended approach to teaching, e.g., using lectures to communicate information with integrated breakout sessions to deepen understanding of key concepts; virtual seminars to explore ideas as a group; Blackboard quizzes and short exercises to help students reflect on learning continuously in a module. Module learning objectives are divided into weekly learning objectives linked to weekly topics for lectures/discussion, readings, labs/tutorials/e-learning activities. Learning is intended to be cumulative, with assessment reinforcing learning outcomes. I prefer continuous assessment, which enables students to track their progress in the learning process and to revisit areas that require additional study to achieve specifically linked module learning objectives. Assessment feedback is linked to learning outcomes for a given piece; feedback is provided for each learning objective. As Director of T&L, I collaborate with staff to conduct an annual school review of student attributes/outcomes across years/levels, programme structures, module descriptors, assessment, and student feedback. I have also initiated/implemented new subject modules in my school, e.g., Qualitative research methods, Reference services, Information Behaviour research. On average, I have created new modules/provided complete restructuring of modules to accommodate new/fast paced developments in my field once per year over the past decade. |

Innovation & Leadership
| I continuously try to bring innovation to meet the developing needs of my students, including new technologies relevant to our learning and research together, and different approaches to resolve challenges students experience. I encourage them to experiment with learning. As SILS' Director of Teaching & Learning, I try to bring innovation to staff discussions of programme and classroom innovation, e.g., through organization of staff workshops/seminars, examples of international best practices in teaching innovations, participation in teaching development in UCD. |
