Biography:

Diane H. Sonnenwald is Professor of Information & Library Studies and Head of Subject at the School of Information and Library Studies at UCD, Dublin, Ireland, and an adjunct professor of computer science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is currently president of ASIS&T, the American Society of Information Science & Technology. Diane conducts research on collaboration, information behaviour and collaboration technology in a variety of contexts, including inter-disciplinary and inter-organizational collaboration in police work, emergency healthcare, academia and industry. This research has been published in over 90 journal articles, conference papers and book chapters. Her work has been funded by national and international funding agencies, including the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, European Science Foundation, as well as private corporations and foundations. In 2002 Diane was a Fulbright Professor in Finland. Other awards and recognition include a U.S. Army Research Laboratory Scientific Contribution Award, UNC Junior Faculty Research Award, ALISE Research Methodology Best Paper Award, and Bell Communications Research Award of Excellence. Professor Sonnenwald has a PhD from the School of Communication and Information, Rutgers University.

Research Interests

Collaboration is an integral component of many research, work and educational settings where complex and dynamic goals, problems and tasks require expertise and other resources from different disciplines, organizations and countries. Yet collaboration can be challenging as individuals with different expectations, knowledge, language, resources, work practices, and personalities try to bridge their differences to effectively share information and achieve their goals.

I conduct and supervise research on collaboration in a variety of contexts. This includes: investigating how socio-organizational practices and technology impact collaboration; examining information behaviour in collaborative situations; and, the design and evaluation of technology to facilitate collaboration. The overall goal of my research is to enable more effective collaboration.

Teaching is an integral component of my activities as well. My courses and workshops focus on research methods, theory development, systems analysis and design, and collaboration.
