In addition to his long and world-class career in Hispanic Studies, in September 1988 Don was appointed by the then UCD President [Patrick Masterson] as Chair of the Faculty of Arts Subcommittee (multi-disciplinary) on a Centre for Language Study in the university.  The Subcommittee's report in April 1989 led to the foundation of the Applied Language Centre shortly afterwards. Don remained associated in many capacities with the ALC contributing greatly to its development until his retirement. Don and the then Dean of Arts, Prof Fergus D’Arcy (School of History) worked very closely together on the vision and direction of the UCD Language Centre project and the Daedalus Building project.
