The School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics has a vibrant research culture which is at the heart of postgraduate opportunities for students. Our postgraduate programmes range from the taught MA with specializations in the individual languages, French, German, Italian and Spanish to Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, as well as European Regional and Minority Cultures, to the Research MLitt and PhD degree.
A taught MA (either full-time or part-time) offers intensive teaching (six 10-credit modules) that will build on foundational, undergraduate study and incorporate a Minor Thesis dissertation (30 credits).
In a taught MA, you learn to:
Consolidate your analytical awareness
Present and discuss ideas
Benefit from small-group teaching
Carry out independent research (a taught MA includes a Minor Thesis Dissertation)
Work closely with a supervisor for an individual research topic
Choose a language and culture-specific (Spanish, Italian, German, French), cross-subject (two or more languages), linguistic, literary, historical or an interdisciplinary pathway.
