Welcome to UCD School of Languages, Literatures and Film.

The School is multi -disciplinary and comprises such academic areas as Film Studies, French, German, Italian, Near Eastern Languages, Portuguese and Spanish. The diversity of the subject areas is evident in the research and teaching interests of the academic staff from a broad range of experience and backgrounds.

Our research areas include literary and critical theory, intellectual and cultural history, linguistics, film, drama and visual culture. Students in the School may choose modules such as the Literature of Québec, Latin- American Culture and Literature, Sociolinguistics (covering among other topics the dialects of French, German Spanish and Italian speaking regions of the world), History of Hollywood Cinema, Contemporary Literature, Dante Studies, Arabic Language and Culture, Hebrew, Study of the Dead Sea Scrolls, Second Language Acquisition Theories, Golden Age Drama, Modern Drama, Music and Literature to Medieval Literature. A complete list is available on the subject websites.

In the School, students benefit from a range of teaching and learning situations. Language teaching is conducted in small student centred groups. Students take practical language classes throughout their degree programme, have access to native language speakers and are encouraged to spend as much time as possible in a country in which the target language is spoken. Students who opt for the B.A. International programme have the opportunity to spend one academic year abroad under the Erasmus scheme. This close encounter with another language and culture is an invaluable experience for our students. Academics and creative writers visit the School on a regular basis.
