Our School offers various Undergraduate and Postgraduate degree pathways in the areas of French & Francophone Studies, German Studies, Italian Studies, Spanish Studies and Portuguese Studies.
At the Undergraduate level, small-group teaching and frequent feedback on individual progress ensure the necessary support for intensive language learning, allowing students to attain an advanced level of proficiency by the end of their degree. As students learn to master the language, they also acquire an understanding of the culture in which the language is embedded, through, for example, studies that engage with literature, film, politics and history. Some modules are intercultural and comparative in nature, opening up innovative study trajectories across cultural and linguistic boundaries in today’s ever-changing globe.
Students are encouraged to spend time abroad in order to immerse themselves in the language(s) and culture(s) of their degree. Indeed, the BA International in one language and the BA International in Modern Languages involve one credited year of study abroad, during which linguistic competence and the ability to interact with confidence in the chosen culture are developed in tandem.
A great range of staff research interests and regular publications underpins the School’s Graduate programmes which, as well as offering taught options in and across all languages, embrace Second Language Studies and European Regional and Minority Cultures. The School has many close teaching ties with universities in Europe and beyond, ties further enhanced by strong research links that have been cultivated by staff and have resulted in diverse collaborative ventures.
Languages are not only disciplines in their own right; they support a host of other disciplines, from history and law to science and business. Flexible and mobile, our graduates acquire skills and knowledge pertinent to many spheres of employment, in Ireland and beyond.
