Shelbourne 0 UCD 1
30-9-2001, Tolka Park

It was not a vendetta that caused Shelbourne to suffer their second successive League defeat at Tolka Park last night, but it certainly was an inside job. Guiding UCD to three valuable points were Shelbourne's Player of the Year from last season, Paul Doolin, and former first team coach Noel White, who departed from Tolka Park only a few weeks ago. Between them, they ensured that UCD had the full measure of a Shels side that badly missed the suspended Dessie Baker and player-manager Doolin fully deserved the ovation which the home crowd sportingly gave him when he substituted himself.

Shels dominated the possession but failed to break down a resolute College defence so much so that UCD goalkeeper Barry Ryan was called into action only in the final half-hour. UCD went ahead the 19th minute. Their first attack of the game produced a series of three corners and they scored from the final one as the in-rushing and unmarked Alan McNally sent a bullet-like header screaming into the net. The visitors' confidence soared after that and they frustrated Shels by defending in numbers and breaking on the counter-attack.

So successful were their tactics that Shels didn't land a shot on target until the 60th minute when Richie Baker was freed on the left only to be denied by Ryan's legs. By that stage, UCD's backs were being pressed firmly to the wall but they almost stretched their lead when Gareth Downey's dreadful kick-out was met on the volley by James Timmons and the ball bounced inches wide of the embarrassed goalkeeper's empty net. With occasional flashes of lightning adding to the drama, Ryan continued to perform heroics in the UCD goal, saving memorably from Jonathon Minnock and Tony McCarthy as Shels searched in vain for an equaliser.
UCD showing that if they are to go down, as predicted by many, they'll do so fighting.
