Equality Studies

The Equality Studies Centre is the only research and teaching centre of its kind. Established in 1989, the work of the centre is inspired by the Freirean principle that education either works for domestication or for freedom; education cannot be neutral in the face of injustice. . Because of this Equality Studies is devoted to linking the theoretical understanding of equality with the theory and practice of change. The Centre recognises also that change cannot be achieved through the production of knowledge in isolation from experience; transformative scholarship needs to be vivified and challenged by the experiential knowledge of those who experience injustice and oppression. To this end, the Centre maintains strong links with activist groups both in Ireland and internationally. Its graduates are activists for equality and social justice across the world.

The originality of the Equality Studies Centre lies in its holistic and interdisciplinary perspectives on issues of equality and social justice, and its democratic approach to the production and dissemination of research and theory. The scope of its interests range from local and national, to European and global. Because of its principled allegiance to interdisciplinarity, the Centre has established strong cross university links with cognate Schools within UCD and with egalitarian scholars nationally and internationally.
