A worker co-operative is a business owned and democratically controlled by the people who work in it in which the importance of capital should be subordinate to labour. PRAXIS/UCD Equality Studies organised on a conference on worker ownership in April 2012 in collaboration with MeithealMidWest from Limerick, Trademark Belfast and Kilbarrack Community Development Programme. The event was a follow-up to a two-day study visit to the Mondragon worker-owner cooperative in Spain organised by Bill Kelly of MeithealMidWest. Since then we have been working with the support of Bruno Roelants, General Secretary of the International Organisation of Industrial, Artisanal and Service Producers' Co-operatives (CICOPA) and a variety of international and UK organisations to promote the infrastructure for worker ownership legally and organisationally in Ireland.

Founded in 1989, the aim of the WHAI is to promote research into the history of women in Ireland. The WHAI sponsors an annual conference and circulates regular news bulletins to members about upcoming publications, conferences, seminars and other events related to the field of women’s history. The Irish Queer Archive contains the most comprehensive collection of material in Ireland relating to homosexuality and general queer studies. The IQA a vast collection of material which provides fascinating and valuable insights into the social, cultural and political history of the LGBT communities in an Irish and international context during the latter half of the 20th century – was presented in 2008 to the National Library of Ireland following a decision to donate it by the National Lesbian and Gay Federation.

Debt Justice Action

Debt Justice Action is a broad based coalition of non-party political organizations and individuals campaigning for debt justice, both in Ireland and in the Global South. We seek to build alliances with networks and organizations in Europe and the Global South on the issue of debt justice, and act in solidarity with peoples worldwide affected by the imposition and payment of illegitimate debts. Since 2011 we have run a campaign called 'Anglo: Not Our Debt', which calls upon the government to refuse to pay the debts of Anglo Irish Bank (now the IBRC) on the grounds that the debts of these now state-owned institutions are not the responsibility of people in Ireland, and that the payment of this illegitimate debt has had and will continue to have devastating consequences for Irish society.

Judy Walsh has collaborated with numerous NGOs working on social justice issues on the island of Ireland. She was co-chairperson of the Irish Council for Civil Liberties from 2003 to 2008: http://www.iccl.ie/ The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) is Ireland’s leading independent human rights watchdog, which monitors, educates and campaigns in order to secure full enjoyment of human rights for everyone. In that capacity she co-authored policy publications as well as submissions to international human rights bodies and appeared before Oireachtas committees.
