Biography:

I am the UCD Professor of Equality Studies. While my major area of equality research has been in education, for the last 10 years I have also been working on issues of egalitarian theory and practice with my colleagues in Equality Studies. We have published two major works in the field Equality: From Theory to Action (2004, 2009) and Affective Equality: Love Care and Injustice (2009). The latter was listed as one of Ireland's 100 best books in 2009 by the Irish Times. As an academic and an activist, I have been guided by the belief that the purpose of scholarship is not just to understand the world but to change it for the good of all humanity. For this reason, I played a key role if founding the UCD Equality Studies Centre in 1990 and the UCD School of Social Justice in 2005. In 2005 I also helped establish the UCD-wide Egalitarian World Initiative Network (EWI) of staff involved in research and teaching on equality and social justice. I chair the EWI and am lead scientist for the EWI Marie Curie Transfer of Knowledge Award (2006-2010) on Creating and Egalitarian and Socially Inclusive Europe (ESIE).

Since 2007, I have been an advisor to the EU Directorate Generalate on Education and Culture (DGEAC) as a member of the European Network of Experts in the Social Sciences on Education and Training (NSSE). In 2006, I was a visiting fellow at Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge University and was an Irish Government Senior Research Fellow in 2006-7. I am one of 12 visiting global experts invited to be involved in the GEXcel (Gender Excellence Research programme) in Sweden at the Universities of Linkoping and Orebro in 2010. In 2010 I was also appointed by the Minister of Education in Ireland to the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences. I work closely with a number of voluntary and community organisations devoted to the promotion of social justice and equality.

Research Interests

Equality in education including issues of social class, gender, disability, age, sexual orientation and ethnicity; emancipatory, participatory and feminist research, ; role of the unviersity in social change; theoretical issues in equality; gender and care work; affective equality and its relationship to economic, political and socio-cultural equalities.

I chair the UCD Egalitarian World Initiative Network (EWI). This network received a Marie Curie Transfer of Knowledge Award for 2006-2010. The project title is Creating an Egalitarian and Socially Inclusive Europe (ESIE). I am the lead scientist on the project which is hosted in the UCD Equality Studies Centre in the School of Social Justice (for information see http://www.ucd.ie/ewi/). I am a core Group member of NESSE the EU Network of Experts in the Social Sciences on Education (appointed by the European Commission).
