UCD Equality Studies Centre

Equality Studies is an interdisciplinary field that analyses significant equalities and inequalities in human life. It addresses multiple topics including patterns of inequality, explanations of inequality, principles of equality and equality objectives, egalitarian social, political and economic institutions and strategies for change.

The UCD Equality Studies Centre was set up in 1989 in order to foster teaching and research in the field and has since established an international reputation for its work. We welcome visiting scholars from across the globe and are privileged to work with researchers, teachers and activists on many initiatives.

The Centre was the lead partner in an EU Marie Curie Transfer of Knowledge project (2006-2010) which sought to establish UCD as a focal point in Europe for research on equality and social justice. Such projects combined with the civil society work of Centre members helps to ensure that our research contributes to positive social change.

Our research cluster on Critical Political Economy is coordinated by Marie Moran and Andy Storey. The cluster's homepage can be found here.

Equality Studies Centre Events:

The Equality Studies Centre is co-hosting with the Dublin European Institute a public lecture on November 8th, by Pavlos Roufos from the University of Kassel, Germany. Pavlos will look back at the Greek crisis and ensuing austerity, asking the question of whether EU efforts represented crisis management, or rather, the management of inequality. His paper is based on his recently published book, 'A Happy Future is a thing of the Past' (University of Chicago Press), praised by Noam Chomsky as 'a careful and penetrating analysis' of the Greek Crisis and its aftermath.

The lecture will be held in the seminar room of the Geary Institute and begins at 6.30pm. Further details in the poster here. All welcome.
