Scoil na Socheolaíochta UCD

Graduate Programmes

Graduate education is an integral part of UCD's mission and the university is committed to offering programmes that are at the cutting edge of research and scholarship.

The School of Sociology at UCD is the largest such school in Ireland, and is an excellent place in which to undertake graduate study. With 16 full-time staff and approximately 1,300 students - including more than 55 postgraduate students - the school plays a very significant role in the development of sociology in Ireland.

The graduate programmes in sociology are a central part of the school's activities. First established in 1991, the MSocSc programme has an annual intake of between 20 and 30 students, and is the premier programme of its kind in Ireland. Currently students can choose between 3 different types of Masters programmes. A general Masters in Sociology, a Masters in Health, Wellbeing and Society, and a Masters in Global Migration and Cultural Differences.

The School is also a collaborating partner of the Erasmus Mundus Joint European Master’s in International Migration and Social Cohesion (MISOCO). This two‐year programme offers students the unique opportunity to study international migration in three European countries. Second year students of this programme can come to UCD’s School of Sociology to complete their studies. Student Scholarships are available for this programme. Please see www.misoco.org for more information and application requirements and deadlines.

In addition, there are more than 25 students in the PhD / MLitt programmes doing original research on a wide range of topics.

As Ireland's capital city, Dublin's thriving and cosmopolitan atmosphere makes it a popular choice for graduate study. It offers a very vibrant social life and first-rate cultural amenities. The vast social changes that have occurred throughout Irish society in the last decade also provide enormous research opportunities for students.

Online applications for the Masters programmes open in mid-February. Non-EU applicants who require a student visa will be assessed first as their submission deadline is 31st of March. Please see General Information and Application Requirements for full details.

PhD/MLitt applications are considered throughout the year.  Please see PhD/MLitt programmes for full details.
