General Information & Application Requirements

  • Entry Requirements

Applicants should normally have a primary degree in sociology or a closely cognate discipline, with at least a second class honours grade two standard or equivalent. Applicants with a joint honours primary degree should normally have attained a standard of at least second class honours grade two in their final degree.

  • Closing date for Applications

Complete applications should be received by June 30th (or March 25th for non-EU students who require a student visa) in the year in which entry is sought. 

Please note: the areas and modules offered and the programme of study may vary in any one year. The modules outlines presented within each programme are intended as examples of the range of themes that may be discussed and analysed within each module.

Supporting documentation which must be submitted by all students (other than UCD students). Applications will not be considered unless all documents are submitted immediately and received by UCD before the closing date:

  1. Complete official transcripts (notarised English translations where relevant) giving details of all courses taken and examination marks obtained.  (If applicants have not yet graduated, they should send their most recent results now and request their university administration office to send an official transcript, specifying courses taken each year and grades received in each examination, including grades in their final examination, immediately they become available).

  2. Letters of recommendation from two academic referees.  There is no form.  Please ask referee to place reference letter in an envelope, seal it and write their signature across the seal.  This should be returned to you, for you to submit with all your documentation to On-line Applications.

  3. Copy of Birth Certificate, or relevant pages from passport confirming official name and date of birth.

  4. English Language Proficiency. Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit evidence of  a certificate of proficiency in the English language (such as TOEFL minimum score of 600 or 250 computer based, Cambridge or IELTS minimum score of 6.5 with 6.0 in each band).  Test results must be less than two years old. 
  • Fees and Grants

Details of fees can be obtained from the Fees and Grants Office. Please note: non-eu students can pay half their fees in September and the remainder in January. Grants held as an undergraduate can normally be continued on if the Master's programme is begun in the year of graduation.
