General Information & Application Requirements

Entry Requirements

Applicants should normally have a primary degree in sociology or social science, or a closely related discipline. A Second Class Honours Grade One (2H1) or higher is required but Second Class Honours Grade Two (2H2) standard or equivalent may be considered. Applicants with a Joint Honours primary degree should normally have attained a standard of at least Second Class Honours Grade Two (2H2) in their final degree.

Applicants who do not meet the academic requirements but can confirm professional qualifications and/or experience will be considered.

All candidates are expected to be proficient in written and spoken English. Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit evidence of a certificate of proficiency (such as TOEFL, Cambridge or IELTS). Test results must be less than two years old.

Closing date for Applications

Applications for NON-EU students should be completed before March 25th  2012 to allow for VISA application process. All other applications should be completed no later than June 30th 2012.

Supporting documentation must be submitted by all students.  Applications will not be considered unless all documents are submitted immediately and received by UCD before the closing date.

Your original documentation should be sent to Mr Martin Hurley, Online Applications Team, UCD, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland.

  1. Complete official transcripts (notarised English translations where relevant) giving details of all courses taken and examination marks obtained.  If applicants have not yet graduated, they should send their most recent results now and request their university administration office to send an official transcript, specifying courses taken each year and grades received in each examination, including grades in their final examination, immediately they become available  (Not required for UCD students).

  2. Letters of recommendation from two academic referees in a letter format. There is no form required. Please ask referee to place reference letter in an envelope, seal it and write their signature across the seal.  This should be returned to you, for you to submit with all your documentation to the On-line Applications Team.

  3. Copy of Birth Certificate, or relevant pages from passport confirming official name and date of birth (Not required for UCD students).

  4. English Language Proficiency: Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit evidence of  a certificate of proficiency in the English language (such as TOEFL minimum score of 600 or 250 computer based, Cambridge or IELTS minimum score of 6.5 with 6.0 in each band).  Test results must be less than two years old. 

Applicants who wish to have their original documentation returned by post should include a stamped addressed envelope. Please note that UCD can take no responsibility for returned documents that go missing in the post.

Any offer will be conditional until we have received satisfactory original transcripts. The University reserves the right to withdraw an offer in the case of misrepresentation, or if any false information was provided, as in, for example, where the original documentation does not match the documentation on which the offer was made.

Non-presentation of original transcripts may result in the cancellation of registration. Students who wish to have their registration re-activated subsequently will be subject to a charge of 250 euro.

Fees and Grants

Details of fees can be obtained from the Fees and Grants Office. Please note: non-eu students can pay half their fees in September and the remainder in January. Grants held as an undergraduate can normally be continued on if the Master's programme is begun in the year of graduation.
