The Higher Diploma is for graduates with good primary degrees in disciplines other than Sociology.  Based on the Bachelor of Social Science Honours Degree programme in Sociology, the Higher Diploma provides a foundation in Sociology and Social Research that serves as a means of transition to Masters and/or Doctoral research.

The Higher Diploma has attracted students from Archaeology, Business Studies, Development Studies, Economics, History, Information Studies, Law, Literature, Medicine and Theology as well as those in full-time occupations seeking a career-break.  Many Higher Diploma students have subsequently gone on to complete Masters Degrees and PhDs in Sociology.

What will I learn?
You will learn the fundamentals of the discipline of Sociology with a special emphasis upon learning about the diverse traditions of sociological theory and the varied techniques and methods employed in social research.  You will learn to hone your written, oral and analytic skills through essay-writing and will develop your independent research capacities through the conception, design and execution of a small research project leading to the production of a short dissertation.

How will I benefit?
The Higher Diploma enables you acquire specialised knowledge and specialist skills in analysis and research that will both stand to you as a citizen and enhance your attractiveness to employers in fields as a varied as education, media, marketing, the civil service, non-governmental organisations and the community sector.

What is the programme about?
The programme provides a grounding in the discipline of sociology and the practices of social research.  It covers the major traditions of social theory and the diverse methods and techniques used in researching social issues and sociological topics.  A wide range of optional modules are available covering substantive areas of sociological research that reflect the major concerns of the discipline as an international field of scientific enquiry and research.
