We are the largest and leading school of Sociology in Ireland. We offer diverse, innovative and interdisciplinary variety of exciting modules, and the programme in Health & Illness is taught by some of the leading experts in the field in Ireland.
The MSocSc in Health, Wellbeing and Society provides knowledge and skills related to the sociological understanding of health and wellbeing in contemporary society. Core themes include identifying and explaining the nature and pattern of health, illness and wellbeing at both local and global level. The programme utilises sociological concepts such as gender, ethnicity and class to pursue this understanding and in doing this draws on the theoretical and research expertise of staff within the School, College and the wider university. The programme also offers advanced training in quantitative and qualitative research methods.
The following are some of the key themes covered in the programme:
- Changing and emerging definitions of health, illness and the body;
- Gender identities, heath and well being;
- Global health and healthcare systems;
- Differential access to health care and services;
- Life course and health/wellbeing issues;
Students, when undertaking independent research as part of their thesis will have regular one-to-one support from a sociologist who has academic experience relevant to their topic. We also provide specialised workshops that provide students with the skills necessary to undertake independent research.
